Ekiden Relay

16 July 2017

The Ekiden is a race which originated in Japan where teams of runners compete in a relay over long distances.  The races are very popular and some attract television audiances of over 1 million.

Ipswich Jaffa Running Club have been staging the only Ekiden Relay held in the UK for over 20 years, and it is now a well-established fixture in the local racing calendar and attracts runners from all over East Anglia.  The Senior event is run over six stages and the combined distances of each leg (1 x 7.2k, 3 x 5k, 2 x 10k) is the equivalent of a Marathon ie 26.2 miles.

There is a Junior event too held for under 16s which comprises four legs of 1.1m each.

This year's Ekiden Relay is taking place at Woodbridge School on 16th July. After an excellent day out with a very healthy turnout from Pacers last year, I’m sure many club members wish to return for another go, and hopefully our new members will join in and participate in this unique event.
In the past this has proved to be a lovely club day out and completely inclusive of all abilities; if you are a member of this club and you wish to take part, you’re in!

You can let me know, down the track on a Monday or Wednesday night or email ian.gooderham1@btinternet.com
